A FORGOTTEN MEMORY                                                                   French version

Since 1995, Cinemémoire has collected private collections of film. It has built up an archive of family films and undiscosed amateurs. Her mission, following regional and european rules, is to collect, digitize and keep archives, particularly from colonial times.

Those films are undisclosed and are a patrimony for mankind that needs to be preserved.

Taking them into consideration has been a struggle because they are “only” family films, they are fragile and fragmentary. Nevertheless, those images talk about man, anonymous people. They are a glimpse of the past. Sometimes there are some very rare images from important events.

This is why Cinememoire has been working on its memorial duty, to collect those images that, if they remain on the same support are doomed to disappear with time, taking away tha traces of all those looks and exixtences.

Those images have no meaning if they’re not shared. The images from colonial times have been shot in a context of political and economical domination where europeans had a monopole over means of audiovisual production. The africans had no cameras (or very few) to keep a trace of their memory. Nowadays, whatever use is made of those images, there is a need for a double outlook on thoses images. They have to go back to the place they describe and to the reality they witness. Sharing the images, sharing the memory is duty if we want to retrieve a common meaning.
